Description
A nostalgic and indulgent mashup of two American comfort classics—grilled cheese and sloppy joes—this sandwich is crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and packed with flavorful, saucy ground beef. Perfect for busy weeknights or a cozy weekend treat.
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tbsp mustard
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper, to taste
6–8 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, or mozzarella)
8 slices of thick bread (sourdough, Texas toast, etc.)
2 tbsp butter
Optional: chopped bell pepper, jalapeños, plant-based meat alternatives
Instructions
Cook the Meat:
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned.
Drain excess fat.
Add Flavor:
Add onion and garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes until soft.
Stir in ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
Let simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
Assemble Sandwiches:
Butter one side of each bread slice.
Place cheese on the unbuttered side, add about 1/2 cup of the meat mixture, and top with more cheese (optional).
Close with another slice, buttered side out.
Grill the Sandwich:
Heat a clean skillet. Cook sandwiches 3–4 minutes per side on medium heat until golden brown and cheese is melted.
Serve:
Let rest for 1–2 minutes. Cut and serve warm.
Notes
For a spicy twist, add jalapeños or hot sauce.
Use plant-based meat for a vegetarian version.
Best with thick, sturdy bread to avoid sogginess.
Can be made as sliders or open-faced.
